Iodine is one of the most important minerals required for healthy cellular and complete metabolic function. There is no life without iodine and it has been estimated that the entire population is deficient in iodine. For thyroid support and to protect against forming of a goiter, only small amounts of iodine are required. But today, doctors have found that all tissues of the body require iodine. The breasts, ovaries, uterus and prostate tissue require large quantities of iodine. In the early 1900s Dr. Szent-Györgyi, the discoverer of vitamin C, was reported to have said that they did not know what iodine did in medical terms but it did everything good and was used for almost all health conditions. It is also reported that he himself ingested 1,000 mgs a day of iodine. The quality of health of Japanese women is far superior to women in the United States. It has been estimated that Japanese women ingest 12.5 mgs of iodine daily. On the island of Okinawa there are a higher percentage of people over 100 than anywhere else in the world. It has been reported that they ingest, through their diet, 80 to 200 mgs of iodine daily. Could iodine be the missing link to good health? According to several holistic physicians, the answer would be yes. The book by Dr. David Brownstein, Iodine, Why You Need It and Why You Can’t Live Without It, says it all.*

“Iodine is the most misunderstood nutrient. After 12 years of practicing medicine, I can say that it is impossible to achieve your optimal health if you do not have adequate iodine levels. I have yet to see any item that is more important to promoting health or optimizing the function of the immune system than iodine.”
–David Brownstein, M.D.

How It Works

Iodine is an essential mineral. However, the average intake of iodine in the United States is much lower than in other countries, particularly Japan, whose residents may consume as much as 200 milligrams of iodine daily. Although perhaps most widely recognized for its role in the formation of thyroid hormones, many organs in the body utilize iodine. Breast, uterine, prostate, and ovarian tissues in particular have high iodine requirements. Tri-Iodine™ combines three different forms of iodine in order to provide complete support for all body tissue types.*

Molecular iodine
A review paper examining results obtained in studies of breast health noted that while all forms tested (molecular iodine, sodium iodide and potassium iodide) produced beneficial effects, the best results for breast support were achieved with iodine.*1

Sodium and Potassium iodide
Potassium and sodium iodide are the forms of iodine utilized by the thyroid. Iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones. Supplemental iodide is important for optimal thyroid function.*2-4

FAQS

Q: Isn’t iodine supplementation just for preventing goiter?

A: Actually, only a small amount of iodine is really necessary for preventing goiter. But today, doctors have found that all tissues of the body require iodine. The breasts, ovaries, uterus, thyroid, brain and prostate tissue require large quantities of iodine. In the early 1900s Dr. Szent-Györgyi, the discoverer of vitamin C, was reported to have said that they did not know what iodine did in medical terms but it did everything good and was used for almost all health conditions. It is also reported that he himself ingested 1,000 mgs a day of iodine.

Q: Can iodine really make that much of a difference?

A: Yes. Consider this example: The quality of health of Japanese women is far superior to women in the United States. It has been estimated that Japanese women ingest 12.5 mgs of iodine daily. On the island of Okinawa there are a higher percentage of people over 100 than anywhere else in the world. It has been reported that they ingest, through their diet, 80 to 200 mgs of iodine daily. Although it’s mostly recognized for its role in the formation of thyroid hormones, many organs in the body utilize iodine. Breast, uterine, prostate, brain, and ovarian tissues in particular have high iodine requirements.

Q: Why not just take one form of iodine?

A: Adding iodine to your regimen can certainly have benefits overall, but these three forms of iodine are more selective for different tissues. For instance, we include molecular iodine because of research that reviewed study results of breast health. It noted that while all forms tested (molecular iodine, sodium iodide and potassium iodide) produced beneficial effects, the best results for breast support were achieved with molecular iodine.*

However, in the case of thyroid health and the creation of thyroid hormones, sodium iodide and potassium iodide are the best form for support.*

Did You Know?

The word iodine is from the Greek iodes, meaning purple or violet. In its gaseous phase, the element iodine takes on a beautiful pink/purple color, although it is grey when in solid form. In nature, the highest concentrations of iodine (as iodide) are found dissolved in seawater, although some minerals and soils also have iodine. Kelp, a type of seaweed, is able to concentrate iodine and provides a dietary source of this otherwise relatively rare element. Iodized salt was commonly available in the United States by 1924 and played an important role in reducing the incidence of goiter, especially in Midwestern states. However, experts feel that iodine consumption in present times has declined as many people now avoid the use of salt in their diets.
