Astaxanthin is a plant pigment and a carotenoid, in the same family as beta-carotene and lutein. In nature, it is found in many sources, (although Haematococcus pluvial is one of the best) including yeast, salmon, trout, krill, and shrimp. Certain species of birds, such as cardinals and flamingos, are able to metabolize astaxanthin in their feathers, giving them their distinctive bright red and pink coloration, respectively. However, without sufficient astaxanthin in their diets, cardinals are a pale red and flamingos are white.

Q: What is Haematococcus pluvialis ?

A: Haematococcus pluvialis is a green microalgae and one of the richest sources of astaxanthin available. It biosynthesizes the carotenoid, which protects it from the effects of oxidative stress in nature, much the same way that anthocyanins are protective antioxidants for fruits and vegetables, shielding them from the effects of sun, wind, and other environmental hazards.

Q: How does astaxanthin support healthy vision?

A: Astaxanthin has been shown to protect the cells of the eye from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. It also supports healthy eye pressure, an important factor in preserving healthy vision.*  It appears especially effective for anyone dealing with occasional eye fatigue when working with computer or other video screens on a regular basis.*

Q: How does astaxanthin support healthy weight maintenance†?

A: It appears that astaxanthin may help the body use existing fat stores, rather than glucose, more effectively during exercise. So not only does astaxanthin support exercise and muscle recovery, it helps the body get more from the exercise itself.*

† In conjunction with a diet and exercise plan

How it Works:

One of the best dietary sources of astaxanthin is from Haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater form of green microalgae. Astaxanthin helps them harvest light, working with chlorophyll to create food energy. And, as it does for us, astaxanthin helps protect the microalgae from the damaging effects of ultraviolet light and free radicals.

Haematococcus pluvial is the richest natural source of this beneficial compound, and it has been shown to protect the cells of the eye from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. It has also demonstrated support for the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response and support for healthy eye pressure
